CleanMyPC was a popular Windows optimization tool designed by MacPaw to remove system junk, manage startup programs, and uninstall fragmented applications to fix performance lag.
However, MacPaw officially discontinued CleanMyPC on April 22, 2024, meaning the software no longer receives feature updates, optimization patches, or active support for operating systems beyond Windows 11. If you already own a legacy license, you can still use the application to clear out local bottleneck issues.
The step-by-step guide below details how to use your existing CleanMyPC software to boost system speeds, followed by modern built-in Windows alternatives. Step 1: Run the My Computer Cleanup Module
The core performance bottleneck on most older computers is storage bloat. Windows continuously creates temporary cache files, crash logs, and localized junk files that slow down drive indexing.
Open the software: Launch CleanMyPC and navigate to the My Computer Cleanup option in the left sidebar menu.
Scan your drives: Click the central Scan button. The program will evaluate your system registries, temporary caches, and recycle bins.
Review and delete: Once the scan is complete, click Clean to safely wipe away systemic clutter. (Note: The legacy trial version caps free cleaning at 500MB). Step 2: Streamline Your Startup Profile
If your computer takes several minutes to become responsive after turning it on, too many background applications are attempting to launch simultaneously.
Locate Autorun: Click on the Startup (or Autorun) module in the CleanMyPC sidebar.
Identify heavy apps: Look through the populated list of programs configured to launch at boot.
Disable unnecessary items: Toggle off non-essential programs like third-party game launchers, chat applications, or secondary cloud daemons to drastically reduce boot lag. Step 3: Completely Erase Bloatware with the Uninstaller
When you remove software using the standard Windows control panel, it frequently leaves behind empty configuration folders, broken registry keys, and background update services.
Open the Uninstaller module: Select Multi Uninstaller from the main application dashboard.
Select unused programs: Check the boxes next to applications or games you no longer use.
Deep clean: Click Uninstall. CleanMyPC will run the default uninstaller and then automatically sweep for remaining leftover residual files. Step 4: Wipe Browser Extentions and Traces
